Qatar and Chile could become rivals to host the next trade ministers' conference of the World Trade Organization at the end of next year, WTO sources said on Friday. Qatar has been an official candidate for some months to hold the world gathering in its capital Doha.
The Chilean government has also expressed a strong interest in offering Santiago as the venue, but has not yet taken a definitive decision to apply as a candidate, the sources said.
Chile was still examining the costs of such a conference, which would attract thousands of officials, delegates, journalists, business personalities and NGO representatives, not to mention anti-globalization demonstrators. — (AFP, Geneva)
