Half of Egypt's population lives in informal slum areas, according to statements from urban development and slum areas, minister to state-run news agency MENA.

Minister Leila Iskander went on to say that the government has earmarked $10 billion to develop slums without specifying the time-period in which these funds will be spent.

Consecutive Egyptian governments have vowed to develop the informal areas where millions of Egyptians live without basic services such as clean water and sewage. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi created a separate ministry, now headed by Iskandar, after winning the elections in July 2014.
