A recently published economic report by the Emirates Strategic Studies and Research Center showed that the number of expatriate workers in the Arabian Gulf states rose from 1.1 million in 1975 to 3.7 million in 1997.
According to Al-Watan daily, during this period the percentage of expatriate workers out of the total labor force in these states increased from 38 percent to 70 percent.
The report also maintained that 90 percent of employed expatriate workers in the Arabian Gulf arrive from various developing states. The remaining ten percent arrive from industrialized states. — (MENA Report)
