Samsung's newly launched Galaxy S8+ and S8 have evolved as the top smartphones of the year, reveals the new smartphone ratings from American Magazine Consumer Reports (AMCR). The Galaxy S8+ stands at first position while its smaller brethren Galaxy S8 occupies the second spot. The two smartphones have beaten its biggest competitor Apple's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in several categories including design and camera.

"If you want a stunning camera, long battery life, and gorgeous display in a water-resistant package, one of these could be the right phone for you. You just have to be willing to spend the rent money on it: The S8+ starts at about $840, and the S8 at around $720," states the report.

The report notes that the S8 family are better than the previous Samsung phones in ways like its design and size of the screen. The Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inches screen while S8+ comes with 6.2-inches screen. The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge which were the top ranked phone by the CR last year, come with 5.1 inches and 5.5 inches screen-size respectively. According to the report, the S8s are comfortable to hold and don an elegant design. The report has also brought to notice the "awkwardly placed" fingerprint sensor in the phone. Samsung has positioned the fingerprint sensor on the back, right next to the rear camera which makes it difficult to access rear-camera sometimes.

Further, the report states that the S8 and S8+ have the best battery they've seen so far. The CR lab assesses the phone battery in three steps. First is the talk time test where the Galaxy S8+ ran for 26 hours and the S8 hit 23 hours. Next, testing phone's battery life while the phone has its LTE mode switched on and is consuming data. The S8+ was seen to last for 17.5hrs while smaller S8 ran for 14.5hrs. Last they do a battery test of smartphones while the phone is used for web browsing over WiFi. Here the S8 lasted for 14.5hrs while S8 hit 13 hrs.

On the photography front, the two smartphones again score the top position, according to CR. " The colors are rich and the low-light performance admirable. They take great video, as well," states the report.
