Sharjah International Airport announced a 20 percent increase in passenger traffic and cargo management in 2002. Last year’s results indicate recovery from a small dip in passenger movement following the September 11 attacks on the US.

Passengers using the airport totaled 1.03 million, with flight movements reaching 24,803. Freight throughput hit 497.01 million kilograms, transit cargo 284.88 million kilograms and Sea-air cargo 26.96 million kilograms.

Last year, the airport commenced work on an additional terminal. The multi-million-dollar internally funded project has a target date of completion set for sometime this year. According to General Director of the Civil Aviation Authority Mohammed Saif Al-Hajri, the Sharjah Airport has seen a steady rise in passenger volumes over the past two years, causing a degree of congestion in the Arrivals terminal. “The new terminal will double our existing capacity, offering vastly more spacious premises for our Duty Free operations, Immigration procedures and security personnel," he said. — (menareport.com)
