The Sultanate of Oman unveiled a new strategy aimed at developing the tourism and commercial sectors in the country. The project, which commences in 2003, will consist of a number of phases that will feature Muscat Festival 2003 as its flagship.

This step comes with the new vision set by Oman's Government to develop and boost the country's economy and tourism industry. Muscat Festival 2003 is geared at positioning Oman as an attractive destination that has a rich multi-ethnic and multi-cultural background and is unique in its heritage and geography.

In response, a high level steering committee has been appointed from various Omani governmental departments to drive the vision. The Committee's main task is to utilize all possible options in order to conduct an event on par with international standards.

The Muscat Municipality has taken great strides to establish regional and international links with other municipalities in the Arab world, emphasizing its role as a dynamic body in the development of Oman.

The Municipality's responsibilities included duties within the traditional competence of town councils such as construction, repair and cleansing of public streets, passages, bridges, drains and water channels, street-lighting, planting and maintenance of trees. Muscat Municipality's mission goes beyond that to include organizing social and entertainment events in public parks. Muscat Municipality has been responsible for Muscat Festival since its inception in 1998. — (menareport.com)
