Syria’s date output reached 3,051 tons this fall season. The harvest was cultivated from 186,000 date palms planted on 1,008-hectares of land, reported Al-Baath.
The government’s Department of Agricultural Affairs announced that four date palm development centers are currently experimenting with new plant hybrids in order to produce date variations that will adapt to Syria’s climate.
At the end of the harvest season of 1999, Syria produced 3,000 tons of dates from 176,000 date palms. The Ministry of agriculture stated that Palmya and Al-Bukamal are the country’s most fruitful date harvest regions in the country.
There are 100 million date palms in the world today with more than half located in the Arab World. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are the largest producers of dates and other producers include Algeria, Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan. Some 600 different kinds of dates are produced in the Middle East, which accounts for 60 percent of the world's production. — (menareport.com)
