Syria’s Ministry of Economy has authorized the purchase and exchange of foreign currency for non-commercial purposes. Currency exchange rates would be set by the Syrian Commercial Bank, reported Al-Hayat.
The new regulations allow Syrian residents to obtain up to $20,000 in foreign currency for medical treatments abroad. Syrians who wish to travel to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj are also now entitled to withdraw a predetermined amount of dollars to cover their travel expenses.
The import of foreign currency by non-residents into Syria remains unrestricted, as prior to the publication of the new regulations, as is the commercial exportation of Syrian currency abroad. On leaving Syria, non-residents are only permitted to take out of Syria the amount of foreign currency which they declared as carrying upon entering the country. — (menareport.com)
