Syria's Minister of Transport, Makram Obeid has said that half of the work to complete the rehabilitation of the Qamishli Airport runaway has been already accomplished. Following the works, the airport will be able to receive small planes in the north eastern Syrian city of Qamishli.

In a statement to al Thawra daily on Monday, Obeid conveyed that the most important obstacles that stood in the way of completing the rehabilitation project were the non availability of some essential material such as the tarmac, and when the materials became available, the bad weather prevented the continuation of work although 1800 meters of the tarmac were completed.

He expected that Qamishli Airport will be ready to receive small planes by the end of the first quarter of 2005.

According to Obeid , the new lands were incorporated within the project so the runway will be of 3600 meters long.
