The Syrian Ambassador in the UAE, Ahmed Al-Hallaq, recently revealed that the two sides are presently evaluating a proposal to construct a joint railway system to connect both states via Iraq, according to Al-Bayan daily.

Al-Hallaq added that such a project, still under evaluation, could tremendously boost economic, social, and tourism ties between Syria and the UAE.

Recently, Syrian began operations of its first train link to Iran, marking the opening of the regular 60-hour weekly trip. Syria's railways, which thrived at the beginning of the century, were abandoned in recent decades when more investment was directed to air transportation infrastructure. –(MENA Report)
