Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Economic Affairs Mohammad Halaiqah held talks on Tuesday in Damascus with Syrian Minister of State for Transport Ehsan Shreiteh, ahead of scheduled high-level meetings.

The meeting of the Higher Jordanian-Syrian Committee, scheduled for Thursday, will be co-chaired by Prime Ministers Ali Abul Ragheb and Mohammad Mustafa Miro.

The Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported Shreiteh as urging the private sector in both countries to "talk the same language" in order to improve the two countries' socio-economic relations.

For his part, Halaiqah stressed the "importance of basing bilateral cooperation on a set mechanism that ensures efficiency and sustainability." He briefed Shreiteh on the Kingdom's "promising projects in the field of information technology," Petra added.

The joint committee's three-day assembly will be the first since Bashar Assad succeeded his late father Hafez Assad as president of Syria.

The committee, established in the mid-1970s, last convened in Amman in 1999, following nearly a decade of cool relations between the two countries.

The relations between the two countries have improved dramatically over the past year, as His Majesty King Abdullah has sought to rekindle and enhance ties with his Arab neighbours and the region as a whole.-- (Jordan Times)
