Official sources estimate the annual edible oils and fats consumption in Syria at a total of 227,000 tons, of which 67,000 tons of vegetarian oils and 14,000 tons are animal fats. 71,000 tons of vegetable fats and 75,000 tons of olive oil, reported Al-Teshreen daily. Total edible oils exports amount to 18,000 tons per annum, while total edible oils production stands at 185,000 tons per annum.
The Syrian Food Industries Public Company exported three million dollars worth of food products in the first three months of 2001. These products mainly consisted of edible oils and onions. These exports are directed to Japan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Bulgaria. Over the same period, the total value of imports reached $544 million, and consisted mainly of raw materials and spare parts. ― (MENA Report)
