Jordan’s trade exchanges with the Arab world over the first half of the year 2001 were valued at JD 658 million ($927.8 million), making up 29 percent of the country’s total international exchanges, recorded at JD 2.255 billion ($3.18 billion), according to the national statistics bureau.
Over 40 percent of Jordan’s JD 591 million ($833 million) exports were directed at its Arab neighbors, amounting to 241 million Jordanian dinars ($339 million). The Jordanian kingdom had imported JD 417 million ($588 million) worth of merchandise from the Arab world in the first half of 2001, making up a quarter of Jordan’s total imports, valued at JD 1.664 billion ($2.346 billion).
The Jordanian Department of Statistics (DOS) further revealed that 45 percent of the Kingdom’s trade with the Arab world is attributed to exchanges with its eastern neighbor, Iraq. In the first half of 2001 trade between Jordan and Iraq was valued at JD 300 million ($423 million), JD 41.2 million of which were exported to Iraq, while imports from Iraq, consisting primarily of petroleum products, amounted to JD 258 million.
Between January and June 2001, Jordan’s trade with Saudi Arabia amounted to JD 103.2 million, equivalent to 16 percent of the country’s total exchanges with the Arab world. Of this amount, Saudi imports to Jordan were valued at JD 52.5 million, while exports totaled JD 50.6 million.
Exchanges with the UAE during the same period reached JD 46.3 million, equivalent to seven percent of Jordan’s exchanges with the Arab world. These exchanges included JD 25.6 million Jordanian exports to the UAE and JD 20.6 million imports from the UAE.
Syrian and Jordanian trade exchanges totaled JD 33 million during the first half of the year 2001. This figure reflects a five percent increase compared with the corresponding period of the previous year, in which the value of bilateral exchanges reached JD 18 million. — (MENA Report)
