Statistics recently published by the World Bank have estimated that the rate of unemployment in Yemen currently reaches 30 percent. According to the report, the local labor force amounts to 1.3 million workers, with 300,000 new job seekers added to this force annually. Thus, local labor force is estimated to hit 11.2 million in the next two decades.
The Planning and Development Minister, Ahmed Mohammed Sofan, was quoted by Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, stating that the issue of unemployment is one of the most challenging problems facing the Yemeni economy and, therefore, substantial efforts must be made to overcome this obstacle.
Sofan said that his ministry has already prepared a comprehensive plan to restore the local tourism sector in order to control the unemployment problem in Yemen. The ministry asserted that the tourism sector created 200,000 various jobs over the past five years as a result of the rising number of incoming international tourists to Yemen.
The minister stressed the importance of promoting the tourism and mineral sectors in order to decrease the current rate of unemployment. In addition, the minister emphasized that it is essential to attract local as well as foreign investments into these sectors. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
