Transporation of apples from the occupied Golan to Syria started Monday through the international Red Cross. In a press conference held Sunday at the headquarters of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) in Damascus, Chief of the team in the ICRD Jean Fack Friyar said: " Transporting apples will be carried out by Swiss trucks carrying the Red Cross flag and about 200 tons will be transported every day over many weeks."
Friyar added that the long administrative measures which continued over many months lead the farmers selling a part of their crop. "Golan Farmers’ keenness to send the best quality of apples to Syria has led to the reduction of the quantity of apples from 10,000 tons to 7000," he indicated.
"ICRC, the Syrian and Israeli authorities and UN Disengagement Forces UNDF contacted with each other to acquire the approval of transporting the apples," Friyer reiterated.
On the sidelines of the press conference, former member of the People’s Assembly Midhat Saleh said: "The parties concerned approved to transport 15,000 tons of apples, but the Israeli authorities disagreed and reduced the quantity to 10,000 tons in an attempt to put pressure on the Syrian Golan people."
