Several decisions were recently adopted in Tunisia towards promoting new information technologies. The new measures aim at reducing the cost of telephone service, promoting broadband internet connections and assisting NGO's and businesses involved in new information technologies. These steps include, for instance, the reduction of home telephone subscription fees, immediately, from TD60 to TD20 dinars and abolishing the subscription fees for any second telephone line. The telephone subscription fees will be abolished by 2009.

In addition, telephone subscription fees for rural area networks will be reduced from TD60 to TD20 dinars.

According to the new decisions, each Tunisian citizen will possess an e-mail address by 2009.

In addition, 100 new public internet centers (publinets) will be launched by the end of next year.
