FORT WORTH, Texas, July 10 (AFP) - The government of the United Arab Emirates has approved the purchase of 80 new F-16 military aircraft from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, the manufacturer announced here Monday.

The United Arab Emirates airforce selected the F-16 in May 1998, after which a provisional contract was signed this March and the US Congress backed the sale in late May.

General Electric will supply engines for the aircraft, which are scheduled for delivery between 2004 and 2007.

The UAE version of the F-16 will also include new radar equipment supplied by Northrop Grumman.
