ALBAWABA – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will soon introduce a new cash transaction system that uses palm recognition for payments and withdrawals. As a result, credit cards and digital applications may vanish, as citizens will no longer need them for everyday transactions.

UAE: first country in the Middle East to introduce the palm payment system

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), and the Central Bank of the UAE announced the development of a new payment solution that utilizes the palm of the hand recognition. This new technology aims to provide faster and smoother services that will be linked to public and private sectors.

It is worth noting that the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) will showcase this new service at GITEX 2024. According to ICP, the new technology, a part of 'We the UAE 2031', is being tested and developed at the time being.

An ICP spokesperson commented: “It is at the last stage of development. The palm veins of each individual are different. People will provide palm biometrics at the ICP platform, which will be linked to the personal profile of the individual.

Enrolling in palm biometrics will ensure the accuracy of the individual's details. People can make payments or withdraw cash using the palm from ATMs. This project is in collaboration with the Central Bank of the UAE. Work on regulations and policies is underway.

This mode of palm vein payments can also be used at crowded places like metro stations to make it easier for people to access services. Instead of a metro card, people will be able to use a palm to access the metro. It is also highly secure because you can not share details with others, which sometimes people do for their credit cards,” as reported by the Khaleej Times.

It is worth noting that the United Arab Emirates will be the first country in the Middle East to introduce this new service and technology. Sources revealed that the launch will occur once all requirements are met.
