Iran's population passed the 70-million mark in 2000, the official IRNA agency said on Sunday, August 19, quoting a report by the United Nations. "The Iranian population climbed to 70,330,000 inhabitants in 2000", the report said.

According to UN demographic projections, the Islamic republic's population will reach 99 million in 2025 and 121 million in 2050. Official statistics put Iran's population at 62 million but no census has been carried out for a decade. ― (AFP, Tehran)
