UTStarcom, Inc., a global leader in IP-based, end-to-end networking solutions and services, is expanding its presence in the Middle East with the appointment of Abir Hnidi - a veteran of the regional telecommunications market.  The appointment is the latest facet of UTStarcom's commitment to the EMEA region.

Mr Hnidi will lead UTStarcom's efforts in expanding its presence and driving its business and sales activities in the Middle East and has over 17 years of technical, sales, operations and management experience in the telecommunications industry.  Prior to joining UTStarcom, Mr Hnidi was responsible for business development and market strategy within the Stratus
Telecom group, focusing on fixed-mobile convergence market opportunities.

Mr Hnidi has also worked at Encore Networks, where he served as VP, product
strategy, and has held senior technical, sales and management roles at Santera Systems, Lucent technologies, Ascend Communications, MCI and BT. "The Middle East continues to enjoy strong economic growth and the telecommunications sector is poised for rapid expansion with deregulation, strong investments in infrastructure upgrades, and the emergence of powerful
regional carriers such as Etisalat, Orascom and Oger Telecom," said Youssef Kassissia, UTStarcom's vice president for the EMEA region.

UTStarcom plans to leverage an extensive portfolio of products and solutions that enable fixed, mobile and VoIP carriers to build next generation networks based on Internet Protocol and roll out enhanced converged services and applications to their user communities.  Such solutions include broadband access, VoIP, broadband mobile wireless and enhanced services such as IPTV.

"UTStarcom is well positioned to support this growth by leveraging a broad and innovative portfolio of next generation products and solutions," said Mr Hnidi.  "I look forward to supporting UTStarcom's growth in the Middle East by working closely with different carriers and partners in the region."
