Water allocated to farming along Nile River

As of June 6, the Central Nile Water Distribution Authority will allocate 16 million cubic meters of water for irrigation purposes to farms along the river. The authority head, Hussein Alwan, also stated that the water distribution is expected to take four days, according to Cairo based Al-Ahram daily.

Alwan added that water levels in the Nile decreased by six billion cubic meters over the past year, compared with the year before. This deficit is to be bridged by using water reserves from the Aswan Dam.

The Nile waters support all agricultural crops in Egypt, as well as more than 20 percent of Sudan’s total crop area. They are also used as a transport channel and as a hydroelectric power source. ― (MENA Report)
