The Dubai Expo 2020 team has announced a translucent Al Wasl Plaza that will be the centre hub of the expo site.

The plaza will be a unique space at the centre of the 4.38-square kilometre site that will make a dramatic impression on the millions of people visiting Expo 2020 Dubai from around the world.

Al Wasl is not only the historical name for Dubai but also means 'connection' in Arabic, so reflects both Dubai's goal of bringing people together at the Expo and the plaza's physical location at the heart of the site.

The plaza will be topped by a 65 metre-high domed trellis inspired by the shape of the Expo 2020 Dubai logo. The trellis will act as an immersive 360-degree projection surface.

As the dome is translucent, the Al Wasl Plaza will be able to project massive images. The projection will be visible to both, those inside and out. The numerous other features of the plaza include restaurants, fountains, and parks.

It will be able to accommodate 10,000 people and will be a multipurpose venue. The plaza will be used as a garden and can be used to hold different types of events.

The expo team is ensuring that the sustainability theme is followed through completely and will be collecting rainwater and water from the country's humidity to help the garden grow.

Ahmed Al Khatib, Vice President of Real Estate and Delivery - Expo 2020, said that all visitors arriving at the Expo 2020 site will pass through the plaza first to get to the other levels. He said that the pavilions of participants at the expo will be dismantled after the expo, however, the plaza will stay and be a "legacy" for the UAE.

Work is due to start on Al Wasl Plaza in the coming months and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

Expo 2020 Dubai will open its doors on 20 October, 2020 and will end on 10 April, 2021. It will be a festival for all, where everyone can learn, innovate, create progress and have fun by sharing ideas and working together.
