Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo agreed on Wednesday to uphold indirect Palestinian-Israeli talks for a duration of four months, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told AFP. "The Arab foreign ministers ... have agreed to aid the holding of indirect talks between Palestinians and Israelis," Erekat conveyed. "This is so that American efforts to revive the peace process will succeed."
On Tuesday, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas met with the Arab foreign ministers. The meeting, which encompassed the details of the US proposal for the resumption of indirect peace talks took place at the Arab League headquarters. Negotiations must "adhere to Arab principles defined by the Arab peace initiative," Abbas said.
The initiative calls for a normalization of relations between Arabs and Israel in exchange for a full withdrawal by Israel from Arab land, the creation of a Palestinian state and an "equitable" solution for Palestinian refugees.
