Dubai’s biggest free community event attracts thousands of visitors
Thousands of visitors participated in more than 100 free activities ranging from salsa dance lessons to jewellery making at Better U 2011 – a full-day annual community event. Hosted by for the third consecutive year by Eton Institute, UAE’s largest language training and professional development centre, Better U is lauded as the Dubai’s biggest free community event with participation of over 50 leading organisations on the day offering their products or services for free on the day.
With the tag-line “A great day to learn something new!” - Better U aims to celebrate the spirit of holistic development, as well as to encourage individuals to never stop learning.
Numerous local organisations including DEWA, Gulf Photo Plus, Hayya!, Holistic Institute, Social Circles UAE, Pizza Express, Zen Yoga and Eton Institute, offered their products or services for free on the day to the visitors. Packed with fun experiences, live performances, prizes and free giveaways, Better U was an opportunity for both adults and children to stimulate their mind, energize their body, and inspire their soul.
Christine Lampard, a visitor on the day, commented: “The energy at this event is just great. I’ve danced, drummed and tried so many things for the first time. I feel ‘Better’ already!”
Visitors learned how to live holistically with yoga, nutritional workshops, martial arts, and fitness classes, as well as learned a new language, dabbled in pottery and photography, or even learned how to roll their own sushi! There was something for everyone at Better U ranging from dance classes for salsa, ballet, and even bhangra to an entire room dedicated to chess. Visitors of all ages were also treated to energetic and lively performances from latin dance troupe SalsaRica and community drumming group Dubai Drums. A FREE crèche was also available for parents to leave their young children and participate in the activities.
Residents also got a chance to support a number of the UAE’s non-profit organisations at the event, such as enjoying traditional Arabic coffee courtesy of the Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding and other non-profits including Al Noor Training Center for Children with Special Needs, Lose to Gain, and the Maria Christina Foundation.
