A middle-aged wife stunned a court on Monday when she testified that her husband tried to buy her silence after taking a second wife against a Dh75 million check.
The Iranian husband was taken to court after the check bounced.
“He gave me the check in order not to hassle him because he married another woman… he wanted to hush me and to take care of the house and the kids,” the Iranian housewife told the Dubai Appeal Court on Monday.
In July, the Dubai Misdemeanours Court fined the husband Dh5,000 for issuing the Dh75 million bounced check to his countrywoman.
Meanwhile, the defendant had earlier pleaded not guilty before the primary court and renewed his denial before the Appeal Court’s presiding judge Aysar Fouad.
The wife claimed in court that her husband gave her the blank check shortly after he took a second wife.
“I met him and his friend in a mall in Bur Dubai… his friend filled in the amount on the check,” the wife told the court.
When asked the friend’s name by presiding judge Fouad, the wife alleged that she did not know it as the friend is her husband’s friend and not hers.
“The check was blank when I signed it… actually I did not fill in that figure. Actually I was coerced and pressured to sign the check…” contended the husband.
Prosecutors had appealed the primary ruling and asked the appellate court to stiffen the punishment against the Iranian husband.
Presiding judge Fouad adjourned the case until the defendant’s lawyer gets a copy of the woman’s testimony [before the court] and presents his defence later this month.
