A women group performed folklore dance in Jeddah on Sunday to raise awareness on beach pollution, Al-Madina reported.
A group member, Amirah Mushat, said the group performed at an event titled "My Environment, My Responsibility".
"The event was held in a hotel with various activities such as a women's theater with dances and standup comedy acts. The overruling theme of the event was environmental safety and pollution. The dance group portrayed the journey of pollution and how it starts," said Mushat.
She also said the dance not only explained the phenomenon, it also gave a peek into the culture of fishing.
"The group portrayed how fishing and ways to handle sea creatures have differed through the years and some of the current practices are unmindful of the environment. Jeddah is known as the Bride of the Red Sea. The sea is part and parcel of Jeddawis. Keeping the sea clean is the responsibility of every Jeddawi," said Mushat.
She added the dance group was immaculate in the lyrics and tunes it sung and played.
"The dance was based on a folklore from Yanbu and the fishing culture there. They (the group members) told the stories of fishermen and sung their songs," said Mushat.
Shatie District Center head Fatima Ghazi said the center aspires to raise awareness on environmental pollution.
"The current rate of sea pollution is alarming. The center was founded to combat environmental pollution especially when it comes to the Red Sea shore. We organize several campaign throughout the year and in various parts of Jeddah," said Ghazi.
Environmental Safety Committee member Huda Fatani said the committee organizes regular inspection campaigns and documents and reports any environmental violations.
"The committee cooperates with several other environmental groups and communities. We organize lectures and events to promote environmental safety and combating pollution," said Fatani.
