A man allegedly stabbed his countryman multiple times at a bus stop in Dubai, a court has heard. The man has been charged with attempted premeditated murder as he stood trial at the Court of First Instance.

The 21-year-old Sri Lankan worker is also accused of consuming alcohol without a permit. He was under the influence of alcohol on August 18 last year when he stabbed the complainant in the head, abdomen, neck and chest.

He denied the charge in court. The incident was reported at the Bur Dubai police station.

The complainant, a 33-year-old visit visa holder, said he received a phone call from the defendant. "It was in July 2018. He wanted me to have three visit visas issued for his friends. I told him I could not do it for him. On July 16, he approached me again with the same request."

Two days later, a "stranger" contacted the complainant and asked him to meet him at a bus stop in Jumeirah. "I was surprised when the defendant came with him. That man then gave me his mobile phone to talk to someone. The caller was talking about his visa, when the defendant suddenly attacked me," the complainant said during the investigation.

He passed out after he was stabbed. "The moment the defendant brandished the knife, I saw the other man walking calmly to the front of the bus stop."

A police sergeant said they were alerted about a man in Satwa with clothes covered in blood. "We reached the scene and found the suspect standing on the pavement and next to him was the informant. The suspect confessed that the blood was from stabbing a man in Jumeirah who owed him money."
