An Indonesian mayor has suggested that poor nutrition can lead to homosexual and transgender children during a pregnancy seminar at the Tangerang city health office.

“To create Indonesian children that are healthy smart and competitive, the most important thing is, from the beginning, to provide them adequate nutrition, especially breastfeeding," the mayor, Arief R. Wismansyah said. “So, it’s no wonder that recently there are more LGBT.”

According to the Indonesian website Okezone, he also told the audience, "Allah created the creatures of his right pair, Adam and Eve, not Adam and Asep.”

Although homosexuality is legal in Indonesia, lately the country has shifted to be more conservative, with the Indonesian Psychiatrists Association recently listing homosexuality as a mental disorder.

Suzy Yusna Dewi, a member of the association, said: “We really do care about them. What we are worried about is, if left untreated, such sexual tendencies could become a commonly accepted condition in society.”

Dewi also suggested that homosexuality was like an addiction, saying that without constant treatment, a person can "easily return to their previous sexual tendencies," experiencing "withdrawal."

She added that Indonesian culture does not accept same-sex marriage, and should not bow to foreign pressure to change their values.
