A 19-year-old Arsal man was pronounced dead Monday after sustaining an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head the previous night, a security source said.
Authorities were working to determine the circumstances of the death, and it was not immediately clear why the man, identified as Khudr Azzeddine, would have turned a gun on himself.
Azzeddine was transported overnight from his parent’s home, where he sustained his wound, to the nearby Rahme Hospital for emergency treatment. Medical intervention was unable to save his life, and he was pronounced dead Monday morning, the source said.
The teen's death comes one month after a 13-year-old Syrian boy was found dead in his Dinnieh home after reportedly hanging himself following a fight with his siblings.
On average, someone dies by suicide every 2.5 days in Lebanon, while someone attempts suicide every six hours, according to the mental health NGO Embrace, which runs the country's sole suicide prevention hotline.
