A North Carolina man crashed his vehicle into a restaurant, killing his daughter and daughter-in-law, police said Sunday.
Roger Self of Dallas, N.C. went into the Surf and Turf Lodge in nearby Bessamer City with several members of his family, including his daughter, Katelyn Self, and daughter-in-law, Amanda Self. After they got a table, Roger Self went out to his and rammed it into the restaurant where the two women were sitting.
Katelyn and Amanda Self were killed. Roger Self's wife, Diane, his son Josh, and his 13-yeaarold granddaughter, were injured.
Roger Self, 62, was arrested and faces two counts of murder.
The incident took many locals by surprise due to the Self family's connections to the area, including its law enforcement community.
The Gaston Gazette described Roger Self as a prominent proprietor of a private investigations company who has known the district attorney there -- Locke Bell -- for more than 30 years.
Both of Roger Self's children were police officers.
Katelyn Self, who died in the incident, was a police officer with the Gaston County Sheriff's Department. Amanda Self, a nurse at a nearby hospital, was married to Roger Self's son, Josh Self, who is also a police officer in Gaston County.
"All I'd ask is for people to keep the family in your prayers and also the sheriff's office cause we're suffering a little bit right now," Gaston County Sheriff Alan Cloninger said, according to WCNC-TV.
The Gaston Gazette reported that Roger Self had been battling severe depression in recent years.
