Ten reformed drug addicts are being sent on the Hajj pilgrimage, paid for by the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation (AMAF).
The foundation said on Wednesday it had allocated a fund of Dhs200,000 to help the people perform the Hajj this year.
Ahmed Bu Shehab, Director of Institutional Support at AMAF, said: “We believe that gentle persuasion and positive reinforcement always produce the desired reform.
“The positive efforts of individuals, no matter how different their social status, should also be rewarded. AMAF has pledged to cover all expenses of this trip to enable the reformed beneficiaries to perform the Hajj this year and encourage them to start a new life.
“Our support to this category comes in line with our aim to highlight AMAF’s role as an institution that prioritises the affairs of the Islamic community.
“Through this initiative, we also seek to promote a culture of giving and philanthropy in the UAE society, and look forward to further cooperation with Dubai Police for the benefit of the country and its people.”
