This is the dramatic moment a kangaroo jumps into choppy sea waters and gets caught in a swell before being rescued by police officers.

The footage, which was uploaded to Facebook, shows the kangaroo as it jumps into the surf at Safety Beach, along Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, at around 5pm on Saturday.

Brave police jump into the water to save the animal after responding to a triple-zero call over a distressed animal.

The roo can be seen struggling against the breaking waves  as police throw off their clothes and swim out to the animal.

By the time the kangaroo was pulled out of the water and onto the sand, it was unconscious with police fighting to resuscitate it.

In separate footage, the kangaroo is seen stagnant on the ground as officers warm it up with blankets and rub its stomach.

After regaining consciousness, the roo was then taken to nearby Rosebud police station where wildlife officials picked it up.

It is now being cared for by a local Wildlife Centre.

Police have said that the marsupial was 'lucky to be alive due to given the amount of salt water he inhaled' The Mercury reported.

The roo is understood to be in good spirits at the centre.
