Bottles of perfume have been removed from lingerie store Victoria’s Secret in a Qatari mall after the product’s name was considered offensive, AFP reports.
The perfume - called “Victoria’s Secret: Strawberries and Champagne” - was not thought appropriate by authorities in Qatar who made the decision to withdraw the bottles.
Creams and a body mist product from the Victoria's Secret range were also removed from the Landmark Mall in Doha, which is one of Qatar’s main shopping centres.
The products were deemed to be against the “customs, traditions and religious values” of the country, the economy and commerce ministry explained on the social network site Twitter.
Authorities have not explained why the products were considered offensive. An employee at the shop said that the problem was due to the name of the product, indicating that the word ‘champagne’ may not have been viewed favourably.
Qatar doesn’t permit the sale of alcohol outside specific bars and hotels. An official licence is needed for foreigners in the country to buy alcoholic beverages and expats are required to earn over a certain salary.
Victoria's Secret opened its doors for the first time in Qatar in 2011.
