More than 18,700 cases of AIDS have been detected in Saudi Arabia since the disease began to spread through the region in the early 80’s.

Saudi accounts for 431 of the 1,233 new cases of the Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome as reported by the Health Ministry.

“Illegitimate” sexual intercourse and drug abuse were cited as the majority of the reasons for the spread of the disease.

“The total AIDS cases discovered in Saudi Arabia have reached 18,762 since 1984…they include 5,348 Saudis and 13,414 expatriates,” it said.

The report showed 414 Saudi AIDS victims this year contracted the infection through sexual intercourse while 2.5 per cent contracted it through drug use. The remaining people with the disease involved infants infected by their mothers during pregnancy.
