A four-year-old girl is fighting for her life after she was accidentally shot by her father in Qurayyat in northern Saudi Arabia.

A spokesman for the police in the Jawf Province confirmed the incident and the accidental shooting of the girl.

“The police in Qurayyat received a call from the general hospital at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday informing them that a girl, 4, was admitted after she was shot in the head,” Yazeed Al Nawmes said, Saudi news site Sabq reported on Thursday.

“The girl was shot as her father was testing the air rifle in the courtyard of their home. The shot caused bleeding and the girl was kept in the intensive care unit. The rifle licensed in the name of her father was seized, and the Public Prosecution was notified by virtue of jurisdiction.”

The girl was later taken to a hospital in the capital Riyadh.

Social media users offered prayers for the girl, but heavily criticised the father for his recklessness and negligence.

“May God grant her speedy recovery, but I wonder what kind of a father tests a gun amid his children and in his own home. There is no real security with firearms and if there is any problem, all the people around will be harmed,” Mashari Al Harbi posted. “I urge everyone with firearms to keep them away from home and from children.”

Another user said the father should have gone to a remote place to test his gun.

“He is guilty and he should be punished because his recklessness harmed a member of society,” he said. “The fact that she is his daughter and most probably no-one will file a legal suit against him does not mean that he should be allowed to get away with his condemnable behavior. He should be sent to prison.”
