Well, here's another one of those Saudi men trying to justify an baseless law again.
A Saudi historian went on Rotana Khalijiyya TV Wednesday to rationalize why his country won't allow women the basic right of driving. Saleh al-Saadoon explains, "American women don't care if they're raped on the roadside, but we do."
TV anchor, looking horrified, responded, "Hold on. Who told you they don't care if they're raped on the roadside?"
"It’s no big deal for them beyond the damage to their morale," he said on air.
When a question was raised about whether women face the threat of rape by their chauffeur, al-Saadoon suggested foreign female drives to drive around Saudi wives. Because if the wives themselves drive, they could face a number of punishments, including lashes.
Two women's rights advocates, who tried to drive into Saudi Arabia from the UAE, will soon be facing a special "terrorism" court.
Al-Saadoon said women in Saudi Arabia who can't drive are treated like "queens." Maybe if TV viewers were able to hear it from a woman, they could actually believe it.
