A group of impoverished refugees living in a shelter in southwestern Italy have given up their personal allowance to make a donation in support of the victims of the earthquake that struck central Italy on Wednesday, The Independent reported.

Beneficiaries of the Sprar project (Protection System for Refugees and Asylum Seekers), the 75 asylum seekers banded together to raise the 200 euro ($225) as a way of giving back to people in their new homes.

Giovanni Maiolo, Project Coordinator for the initiative said, “They wanted to make a small and symbolic gesture of solidarity with the victims of the terrible earthquake.

The earthquake, which leveled three towns and left people trapped beneath the rubble, has killed at least 247 so far.
