Abu Dhabi Police will distribute free iftar meals to drivers caught up in traffic jams at major junctions in Abu Dhabi during Ramadan.
Hundreds of police men and women will begin fanning out through the capital’s streets starting from the first day of Ramadan to give out meals, a customary practice by Abu Dhabi Community Police during the holy month.
Officers said on Monday that police vehicles, laden with ready meals, will be stationed at key intersections in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region just before Iftar time to distribute meals to drivers regardless of their nationality and gender.
Thirty thousand meals will be distributed by the Abu Dhabi Community Police in a bid to reduce the number of accidents caused by speeding motorists hurrying to make it home in time for iftar.
The meals will be provided jointly by the Abu Dhabi Police and charity organisations in the emirate and will benefit motorists and other passengers on the road.
“This is a practice carried out by the Abu Dhabi Police during Ramadan every year,” said Colonel Mubarak bin Mahirum, director of Abu Dhabi Community Policing, adding that the initiative is intended for charity reasons and to strengthen social ties with the public.
“We will give out thousands of meals to drivers every day,” he said.
