1. Tayseer Barakat

First of these five Palestinian artists to follow is Tayseer Barakat. Barakat was born in Gaza, studied in Egypt then moved to Ramallah. He mainly works with paints, inks and dyes, and his work has a clear serious mood to it.

In his own words as noted by Zawyeh Gallery, he uses dark colors in his work to “reflect the hardships of our time and our present life. I think the pressure on us makes us use dark colors.”

2. Bashar Alhroub

Next on this list of five Palestinian artists to follow is Bashar Alhroub. He’s an award winning, decorated artist who was born in Jerusalem and has artwork hosted in galleries around the world.

Alhroub works with a variety of media like paintings, video and photography displaying a diverse range of styles that address an equally diverse range of feelings, although self-identity and the desire to belong are routinely addressed.

3. Rana Samara

Rana Samara was born in Jerusalem and said, as noted by Zawyeh Gallery, “I spent most of my childhood and teenage years observing and analyzing social and gender relations. I came to understand how precious, yet also suffocating women’s roles as carers and nurturers can be.”

Her art reflects this understanding. Much of her work focuses on gender roles, sexuality and other aspects of life for modern Palestinian women.

4. Khaled Hourani

Another on this list of five Palestinian Artists to follow, check out the work of Hebron-born artist Khaled Hourani.

He’s a renowned artist who lives and works in Ramallah and has held senior positions in the art industry including Artistic Director of the International Academy of Art Palestine.

His scenic paintings and highly detailed conceptual work take clear inspiration from life in the occupied Palestinian territories and are for sale online through Artsy.

5. Karim Abu Shakra

The final artist from this list of five Palestinian artists to follow is Karim Abu Shakra. He was born in Umm al-Fahm to a family of artists who nurtured his work.

His paintings take inspiration from his childhood memories and a deep connection to the nature around him. Zawyeh Gallery notes that he said, “The painting’s theme stems from within me, but before I start painting I try to collect my memories.”
