One lucky punter netted more than £18,000 after she guessed the newest member of the Royal Family would be given the name Archie.

The woman, who has not been named, put £120 on the moniker at 150/1 after Baby Sussex was born on her grandson Archie's birthday, according to bookmakers.tv.

She scooped up £18,120 and told the website she planned to put her winnings aside for her grandson.'

The grandmother said: 'The reason I went for Archie was because my grandson, who is born on the same day as the prince, is named Archie.

'So I thought I'd go for a cheeky bet as perhaps my Archie would bring some luck,' she explained.

'Here I am, £18,000 richer; the money though, I'm going to put aside for my grandson.'

Several bookmakers were offering 100/1 on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex naming their baby boy Archie, in one of the 'biggest surprises in royal betting history'.

Just £100 was staked from 60 bets on Archie, according to Ladbrokes, while Coral said the name drew just a handful of punters.

Both considered Archie to be a huge outsider.

Alex Apati, from Ladbrokes, estimated that more than £1 million will be won on all royal baby markets, which also included gender and due date.

A spokesman from Coral said: 'We only took a handful of bets on Archie so this has to go down as one of the biggest surprises in royal betting history, as it was a 100/1 outsider before the name was revealed.'

The son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not have a royal title like his cousins, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's children, but will be known simply as Master Archie.

In a statement from Buckingham Palace, the royal family announced: 'The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to announce that they have named their son Archie Harrison.

'The baby will be known as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.'

The surname, used by some members of the royal family, was created to recognise the lineage of both Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex presented their newborn son to the world yesterday, just two days after his birth.

Speaking in St George's Hall at Windsor Castle as her husband held their two-day-old child, Meghan said: 'He has the sweetest temperament, he's really calm.'

The former American actress added: 'It's magic, it's pretty amazing. I have the two best guys in the world so I'm really happy.'
