Meet the Twins Born in Different Years

A set of twins who were born fifteen minutes apart have birthdays on different days, months and years after one of the babies was delivered at exactly midnight on New Year's Eve.

Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo, from Greenfield, California, welcomed fraternal twins Alfredo and Aylin within minutes of each other, but on different days, at Natividad Medical Center.

Son Alfredo was born weighing 6 pounds, 1 ounce at 11:45pm on December 31, 2021, while the parents welcomed daughter Aylin, weighing 5 pounds, 14 ounces, at midnight on January 1, 2022. 

Mom Fatima said it was 'crazy' her two children have different birthdays, but she's glad Aylin arrived the day later. 

'It's crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays', she said in a press release from the medical center. 'I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.'  

Twins Alfredo and Aylin will soon join three older siblings — two girls and a boy - at the family home in Greenfield, Monterey County. 

Mom-of-three Madrigal said her family couldn't wait to meet the twins, and that her oldest son was delighted that his first brother would be coming home with his parents. 

'This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career,' said Dr Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at Natividad Medical Group and faculty at Natividad. 

'It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022. What an amazing way to start the New Year!' 

There are about 120,000 twin births in the US each year, making up over 3 per cent of all births, but it's extremely rare for twins to be born with different birthdays.
