The girl, 7, had placed her cat in her backpack when it attempted to get down.

A schoolgirl survived a fall of 100 feet after being 'pushed' out of a ninth-floor window by her cat.

The seven-year-old girl, who has not been named, was home alone when the incident occurred in the town of Novy Urengoy in north-central Russia.

The girl was reportedly playing with the cat while waiting for her mother to come home and take her for a walk.

The child got dressed in her winter clothes, and placed the cat inside her backpack. She then walked up to the window in her room, opened it and leaned out of it to look for her mother.

The cat tried to climb out of the backpack and in doing so pushed the girl's back. She lost her balance and fell out of the window, according to reports.

The child plunged 100 feet and landed on a pile of snow where she was immediately spotted by passersby who called an ambulance.

The girl was rushed to hospital with bad bruising. Doctors said that her winter clothes and the snowdrift softened the fall and protected her from more serious or even fatal injuries.

The cat fell along with the girl but was not injured, according to Russian media.

Police spokesman Yevgeny Zalov told local media: 'The girl was rushed to hospital in a state of shock.

'According to medical examination, she received no life-threatening injuries.

'Police are now looking into the circumstances of the incident.'

A social media user said commenting the incident: 'The cat gave the girl one of its nine lives.'
