Syrian director Amal Omran presented at the French Cultural Center in Damascus her second work called Kohl (eyeliner) which is a group of poems recited along with music and acting that appears on the screen, in a theatrical show style.

The show is an experimentation of all the performance elements or coupling between all kinds of arts such as live music on the stage and reciting poems and acting, in an attempt to attract the largest number of spectators. This is also to push the cultural arena in general towards creating new theatrical styles, according to the daily Tishreen.

The director tries to bridge three elements: recitation, music and the performance of the actress whose eye is blacked by eyeliner in a rough manner.

A world of controversy is provoked by this trio including the debate between the poem that represents love and the sad performance. Kohl includes paradoxes inspiring death and love, embellishment at the same time. The indications of ugliness on the eye in a nervous condition makes primp close to death.

Meanwhile the director focused on the condition created by the voice of the actress and strength of her recitation. The most prominent scene in this connection is when the actress carries out exciting movements and laughs in a tense manner with her hair covering one of her eyes and part of her face. The appearance of one eye on the screen with the lips (mouth and teeth) being clear, reflects the strength of words and symbols. The teeth might be more beautiful but the one eye embellished with Kohl occupies the whole screen -- Albawaba.com
