The play Sae’i Bareed Neruda (Neruda’s Postman) based on Antonio Skármeta's novel The Postman, has recently been staged at al Qabbani Theater in Damascus, according to the London-based daily al Hayat.
The play is based on Chilean writer Antonio Skármeta's best-known novel The Postman for which he won the Casa de las Américas prize in 1969 and numerous international awards, and became one of the leading Latin American writers.
The play was translated by Syrian writer Mamdouh Odwan, directed by Mahmoud Khaddour and costarring Ghassan Masoud, Maher Salibi, Raghda Shaarani and Fayzeh al Shawish, widow of the late renowned playwright Saadallah Wannous.
A large audience from Damascus attended the play, which depicted the eras of democracy rise and decline in Chile, through the story of the Nobel Prize winner, Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s postman, Mario.
The novel was adapted into an Italian film entitled The Postman (Il Postino) in 1995. The film was internationally celebrated, reaping unprecedented box office and critical acclaim, including five Academy Award nominations, Best Picture among them -- Albawaba.com
