Renowned Egyptian actress Faten Hamama has a generous heart, and she’s appearing in a televised charity fundraiser for children with heart problems to prove it.
Hamama will appear Friday in a special show on Morocco’s 2M TV channel to raise funds for children stricken with heart disease, according to Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP).
The five-hour telethon will include special reports and investigations on the ordeals of children with weak hearts. There will also be discussions of the children’s plight, and ways to improve their lives.
The actress will appeal to the television audience to help to these children, with the goal of raising up to 15 million dirhams to build a specialized heart treatment center in Casablanca.
Hamama has recently retired from acting, following her final TV series “Wajh Al Qamar” (Face of the Moon). She has since become a leading figure in the Egyptian and Arab cinema industry, and has stepped onto the international stage.
Th Egyptian star’s career came to a halt in the 1980s, but she surprised her audience in the early 1990s with the movie “Yawm Hilo, Yawm Murr” (Sweet Day, Bitter Day), depicting the living conditions of an average Egyptian family.
Hamama has represented Egypt in many international film festivals and served on several juries. She has won prizes for many of her films, such as first prize at the Jakarta Festival for her movie “The Last Night,” and an award at the former Soviet Union’s Moscow Film Festival in 1983.
She also received an award at Teheran’s third film festival in 1974 for her movie “Al Kayt Al Rafie,” the Cinema Authors and Critics Association award in 1975, and a Cairo festival award in 1977. In addition, she received the Lebanese Golden Award and an honorary doctorate degree from the American University in Cairo.
