An Egyptian appeals court has convicted prominent Egyptian comedian actor Adel Imam to a three month jail sentence after being found guilty of insulting the Islamic religion. The actor was previously convicted by an Egyptian court for the same accusation, but had filed an appeal in the hope that all charges against him will be dropped.
A lawyer that is part of the Islamists parties in Egypt had filed a lawsuit against the actor accusing him of intentionally mocking the Islamic religion in his play “Al Za’eem” (The leader) and the film “Murjan Ahmaf Murjan”.
According to the London based Elaph, Adel said that he has no intention of making any form of comments regarding the sentence and will appeal the second court’s verdict.
Adel stressed that he is convinced with every project he presented and never has he mocked Islam or any other religion in his films. He stated that all his projects are based on different social issues that take place in Egyptian society. Adel added that all his films passed through the strict screening of the Egyptian Censorship Committee and if they contained any insulting insinuations against any religion they would have been stopped.
