The Egyptian Al Haram Appeals Court has decided on July 4th to be the official date to look into the appeal filed by prominent Egyptian comedian actor Adel Emam accused of defaming Islam in his past films. This is the second appeal the actor presents after he was recently sentenced to a three month jail term.
Adel’s lawyer had presented to the court official documents proving the actor is innocent of all allegations made against him.
According to the London based Elaph, Adel’s lawyer stated that all the films the actor starred in achieved tremendous and ongoing success over the years and their only purpose was humor and make people laugh. The lawyer added that the Censorship Committee allowed all the films to be screened without making any alterations to them.
The third hearing on July 4, will be the last and will determine the actor’s fate. The judge at the hearing has the authority to keep the current sentence, lessen the sentence or drop all charges against the actor. According to Egyptian law, the judge does not have the authority to increase the sentence.
