George and Amal Clooney have announced that they are opening schools for refugee Syrian children in Lebanon.

In a statement, the Lebanese-British barrister and her Oscar-winning husband said that they “don’t want to lose an entire generation because they had the bad luck of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Collaborating with Google and HP Inc, the Clooney Foundation for Justice will assist UNICEF and the Lebanese Ministry of Education open seven “second shift” schools in Lebanon. The current system allows Syrian children to attend public schools in the afternoon.

Almost 500,000 Syrian children reside in Lebanon in the wake of the ongoing Syrian Civil War.

The Clooney Foundation has donated $3.25 million to provide school supplies, transportation, and teacher training.

Amal Clooney was born in Beirut in 1978. Her family moved to the UK in 1980 to escape the Lebanese Civil War. She married her husband George Clooney in 2014; the couple gave birth to twins in June.
