Egyptian actor Amr Waked was named the first UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador in the Middle East and North Africa region.
A celebration was held at the Samir Amis Intercontinental hotel in Cairo Egypt of the occasion, in which the actor stated that he is hopeful that he will live up to the responsibility he is given and hopes he has the ability to reduce some of the pain that is felt by victims of the deadly disease that hit many innocent lives like those of children of parents of AIDS and spouses who get the disease from their partner without them knowning.
Amr was chosen due to the fact that he had previously showed great concern for victims and proved to have good knowledge of the disease and its consequences socially and physically. He also is aware of the affect of the disease on its victims and in fact had taken parts in many campaigns that support victims of the disease. One of the campaigns he took part in was titled "Together for the sake of children, together against AIDS".
