Steven Spielberg is helping develop a reboot of hit Warner Bros. animated series Animaniacs, according to a new report.
Spielberg, who executive produced the original series and which ran from 1993 to 1995 on Fox Kids and from 1995 to 1998 on Kids' WB, is said to be interested in a new version along with Warner Bros. Animation and Amblin Television after Animaniacs experienced a surge in popularity due to appearing on Netflix, IndieWire reports.
Animaniacs, which follows the cartoon adventures of siblings Yakko, Wakko and Dot who were locked away inside the Warner Bros. water tower until escaping in the '90s, entered Netflix in its entirety in April 2016.
Insiders say the reboot is in early stages of development, with no network to air new episodes attached.
The series also famously featured animated shorts with characters such as Pinky and the Brain, who received their own show, and the Godpigeon, about a mafia gang of comedic pigeons that parody The Godfather.
Animaniacs, created by Tom Ruegger, featured the voice talents of Rob Paulsen, Tress MacNeille, Jess Harnell, Sherri Stoner, and Maurice LaMarche. The show won eight Daytime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award during its run.
